Planet Wine is a small, down to earth wine shop located in the heart of Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood. Lead by a staff of friendly, informed professionals, Planet Wine offers its guests a carefully chosen selection of nearly 2,000 unique labels – most of which are produced from small, artisan winemakers from around the globe. From affordable and interesting Tuesday night table wines to collectible cults, Planet Wine has a bottle in mind for nearly everyone.

The shop also stocks an impressive selection of artisan and farmhouse cheeses, craft beers and an eclectic array of specialty foods and beverages. Additionally, Planet Wine hosts numerous entertaining and informative tastings, dinners and other wine events throughout the year and recently launched BottleRocket; a dynamic new wine club dedicated to the shop’s many faithful friends and neighbors.

From delicate cured meats to hearty salamis and sausages, we keep our coolers stocked with a wide range of Red Apron Butchery products to go ever so nicely with a big bodacious red or Port City porter. Chef Nate Anda, the man at the center of Red Apron, handcrafts all his goods and, quite simply, makes it all from the best locally raised meats and quality ingredients. It goes without saying, we’re awfully proud to offer such fine charcuterie to go along with the nifty wines and beers we have here in the shop. In addition, you’ll always find a rotating selection of artisan cheeses next to Red Apron treats, and appropriately tasty accompaniments including gourmet crackers and fresh baguettes, delivered daily.

Knowledge is power and, at Planet Wine, knowlege is pleasure. The key to fully enjoying wine is understanding what you are drinking. Where, though, do you start? The wine world is so immense, it can be daunting.

To help you make educated decisions about wine and to share some of our latest and greatest selections with you, we hold free tastings every Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. We focus on winemakers, grapes, regions, technical aspects of wine production, particular importers and more – it’s different every week. Our tastings are casual, but informative and, best of all, you’ll likely discover a great new wine at a nice price.

Staff Picks: Because sometimes you need a second opinion, there’s our always rotating staff picks section. At the front of the shop we’ve lined up what’s thrilling, brightening or simply delighting our talented staff of wine lovers. When you just can’t decide, grab one of these gems.
Monthly PW Packs: Looking to widen your knowledge of Rioja, Cava or perhaps Sancerre? Want to taste your way through a particular wine region at your next dinner party?
